• He Lei Hiwa No ‘Iolani Luahine
Join in the celebration and learn about the life of the great hula master ‘Iolani Luahine in a day long festival, January 31, 2008 at the Keauhou Beach Resort.
Celebrate her birthday will some of Hawaii's prestigious Hula Masters, all students of Aunty ‘Iolani Luahine sharing her hula in a workshop for all to participate. There will be a special appearance by Hula Loea Master George Naope. Hula work shops are being offered in kahiko and ‘auana.
Kamehameha Investment Corporation hosts a tour to the newly rebuilt Hapaiali'i and Ke'eku heiau and to nearby Makolea heiau. You are invited to bring a ho’opuku.
Our evening will culminate with a film featuring ‘Iolani Luahine and her hula. Join us for a delicious poi supper with entertainment by Darlene Ahuna and Lena Naipo and the Hawaiians Unlimited. A panel discussion will follow with ‘Iolani Luahine’s students; Aunty Queenie Dowsett, Aunty Hilda Keana‘aina, Uncle George Naope, Hoakaleihina Kamau‘u, Poni Kamau‘u and Nathan Napoka.

Mondays, February 2, 9, 16, 23, 9:30 a.m. - "Niaulani Nature Walk" - Free Forest Tour in Volcano.
This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians.
Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Meet at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (corner of Kalanikoa & Old Volcano Roads).

• Cherry Blossom Festival in Waimea
This 16th annual festival showcases the annual blooming of Waimea's cherry trees along Church Row Park, and the Japanese tradition of viewing them, known as "hanami". This is the only place in Hawaii that has Cherry Blossoms.
In conjunction with the Paniolo Preservation Society's Waiomina Centennial Celebration, the 2008 festival commemorates the Big Isle's cowboys of Japanese descent. A host of activities will sprawl eastward from the Parker Ranch Historic Homes on Mamalahoa Hwy. 190 to the Hawaiian Homestead Farmers Market on Hwy. 19.
Pink banners around town will identify cultural event sites. There will be demonstrations of bonsai, origami, tea ceremony, sumie, mochi pounding and calligraphy.
The festival offers free shuttle transportation among venues.

New Year Festival with a selection of films from and about China.

Arts lions offer a special blessing on Haili Street fronting the

firecrackers.

This free community festival begins at 9 a.m. at the Kress Building on
Kamehameha Avenue just one short block away from Kalakaua Park in
historic downtown Hilo with Lion Dancers offering traditional
blessings along the street.
The Lions parade up to the park to open
the Festival with thousands of firecrackers at 10 a.m. Up until 3
p.m., Asian arts, crafts, product and international food purveyors
pack tents filled with the sounds, smells and sights celebrating the
Year of the Ox.
Performances, cooking and cultural demonstrations,
and displays illustrate the Chinese influence on Hawaii's people and
